Zoë Quinn Has Launched A Network to Help Fight GamerGate Harassment & Other Online Abuse
Billed as “by survivors, for survivors,” Zoe Quinn and Alex Lifschitz have launched the Crash Override Network, which is also billed as an “online anti-harassment task force.”
Here’s the rundown from the site itself:
Who we are:
Crash Override is a support network and assistance group for victims and targets of unique forms of online harassment, composed entirely of experienced survivors. Our network includes experts in information security, white hat hacking, PR, law enforcement, legal, threat monitoring, and counseling. Most, if not all, of our agents are former clients. Prior to formal launch, our trial runs had great success in helping victims lock down their information, prevent SWATing attempts, and feel like they were back in control of their online life.
What we do:
Our network works preventatively and reactively, warning targets and working with them during episodes of harassment to keep them safe and provide them with the means to reduce harm and rebuild, as well as disempower their harassers. We understand that every cast of online harassment is unique in terms of its targets, aggressors, and circumstances, and that no one plan of survival is suitable for everyone. We instead work with clients to tailor a unique plans [sic] of action, informed by our own experience and prior success in the field.

This is an amazing and crucial development. Especially now that the GG trolls have escalated their game to increasingly dangerous levels, doxxing and swatting feminists. (Link TW for stalking, threat, harassment, misogyny - it is a depressing read but this is what’s happening in 2015).
Feminists in tech have to do all we can to protect women and anyone targeted by these misogynists.
OH BOY another one of these posts I get to take down here goes.
First off, ZQ and Lifschitz have no training in any of the stuff they’re claiming. They’ve also made wild claims to have hired experts in all kinds of fields, and have denied or blocked any questioning aimed at them as to who these supposed “experts” are. The only people speaking in behalf of it are Zoe and Alex. And remember that one of those two people led a harassment campaign against a pro-women-in-gaming charity because they disagreed with her. Really someone you want to run an anti-harassment campaign.
Secondly, they claim to have already “prevented SWATing attempts”, which is pretty much impossible unless they had prior knowledge of someone’s intent to SWAT via an announcement or something, and that’s literally the last thing someone who actually intends to SWAT someone would do.
Thirdly, for the last goddamn time, /baphomet/ is not #GamerGate. They’re entirely different sections of the website that for the most part, despise each other. The only reason they’re doxxing people involved in #GamerGate is because they’re pissed that people keep equating them to the same thing. #GamerGate as a whole has been against doxxing since the beginning, even more so because we’ve been on the receiving end of a ton of it. All you’re doing by blaming #GamerGate for what /baphomet/ has been doing is pissing them off and making them more likely to pull this kind of shit. And nobody wants that. We’re against /baphomet/ as much as you are, considering they’ve done the same to us.
And on that note, Crash Override network has been already selectively deciding who “deserved it” or not. People on #GamerGate’s side who have been doxxed, threatened, or had similar issues, despite doing nothing horrible themselves have been immediately blocked from inquiry on Twitter. “Because if you disagreed with us, you deserved it C:” is what this ends up amounting to. Here’s a handy list of questions that have most often come up in relation to Crash Override. Seems like some pretty reasonable questions to ask a group that you’re going to be trusting to protect you, right? Well, ask any one of these questions at them, and enjoy being added to their blocklist immediately. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself.
Also, consider the fact that Crash Override’s website, which you so handily linked to in this post and that I’ve removed so it doesn’t do any further damage, has been setting off security warnings across the board about the website attempting to steal identity information from those who visit it. Add that to the very thinly veiled threats made in Crash Override’s name and it all paints a very different picture of what the website’s actual intent is.
So in conclusion, if the intent is genuine and Crash Override actually works as described and intended, I’m fully in support of it and it’s ideals. But based on the history of the people behind it, the shadyness in how they’ve been conducting their interactions, and the threats and evidence pointing to the fact that it may well just be a front for a mass doxxing? I’m not holding my breath.
tl;dr A misandrist Feminist that supports doxxing sets up an anti-doxxing/SWATing website that also steals information.
