What critics of GamerGate get wrong by The Factual Feminist
An excellent and well-balanced review of GamerGate that shows both sides of the issue, takes into account both male and female members, and does not dive into biases or mob mentalities - all by a feminist.
An excellent video!
I like Christina Hoff Sommers and I’m glad she took the time to make a video about Gamergate. When she says people want to shame straight men for their preferences, although that does happen a lot and I am against it, it isn’t as widespread as she implies it to be, and that many times people saying “We want less media that caters to straight men and instead have an equal amount of media that caters to people of all genders and sexualities” sometimes gets mischaracterized as “We don’t like it when men like attractive female characters”. All in all, it’s a great video
As a lesbian, I can’t help but feel that, yes, it does come off as “you’re wrong for liking this”. I’m in the position of liking much of what straight dues like, which means that they’re inadvertently pointing the finger at me.
The entire argument of ‘male gaze’ was developed before people gave a damn about the LGBT so… yeah, bisexual women and gay women don’t get acknowledged.
It is very hard to see somebody tearing games like Dragon’s Crown, Bayonetta or similar and really feel like they’re shaming you, especially given the kind of language they use. And, again, they point the finger at straight men and catch women like me in that too.
It really comes off less like “I want to build more” and more like “I want to tear down”. And given I’ve seen a fair few gay men really lust over a lot of male video game characters, I really have to question a lot of the motive around it.
Why?
Because it seems like this ‘tearing down’ of the establishment really focuses on one thing. Straight women. Straight men are told that what they like is wrong. Gay and bisexual women are told that liking a sexy woman dressed in sexy attire is wrong, alongside the straight men. And, frankly, I don’t think many gay men much care how sexy a woman is dressed because they’re not attracted to them.
It really, really seems to me that a lot of this “we have to change sexism in gaming” mostly boils down to “straight women don’t like it, it must change”.
